OVERVIEW
Legal technology risk is no longer an IT problem.
It is a client trust problem, a professional responsibility problem, and increasingly a commercial one.
- Ninety percent of Top 100 UK firms now rank cyber risk as the leading threat to their business ambitions, ahead of macroeconomic volatility at 58%.
- The average law firm breach costs $5.08 million, and 56% of breached firms lose confidential client information.
- The FBI has issued sector-specific advisories about threat actors targeting law firms through IT-impersonation social engineering.
Meanwhile AI has moved from experiment to infrastructure, and governance has not kept pace.
Generative AI adoption in legal organizations rose from 14% to 26% in a single year, with 78% of firms expecting it to be central to workflow within five years. Yet only 41% have an AI policy, only 40% provide training, only 20% measure return, and 71% of corporate clients do not know whether their outside counsel uses AI at all. Eighty-five percent of clients say firms should disclose AI use on their matters.
Inside Legal Tech Risk is built on one organising thesis: cyber, data, AI, vendor and client-commitment risk are not five problems. They are one governance problem viewed from five angles.
Join us to examine where greater control is worth the investment, including private and in-house AI infrastructure; how client restrictions can be applied to individual matters; and what meaningful supervision looks like when AI can act as well as generate content.
Can your firm demonstrate control over the technology delivering its legal work?

FIVE Core Themes
What We're Examining
Five connected themes addressing the decisions that determine how well a firm protects its clients, supervises technology and responds under pressure.
01 / 06
Cyber Resilience & Operational Control
- Could we continue serving clients safely while containing an incident?
- Which systems and processes must keep working during a cyber incident?
- What can be paused without creating unacceptable client or regulatory risk?
- Who makes the critical decisions on containment, recovery and client communication?
- How do firms restore operations without introducing further exposure?
02 / 06
Data Governance & Matter-Level Protection
- Can we enforce this client’s requirements throughout this workflow?
- How should access permissions, ethical walls and retention rules follow information across systems?
- What happens to client data when it moves into search indexes, prompts, generated outputs and connected services?
- Who decides what information can be accessed, reused or shared?
- How are matter-specific restrictions enforced when workflows or technologies change?
03 / 06
AI Assurance and Infrastructure Choices
- Can we justify where AI runs and how its work is checked?
- When should firms use firm-owned infrastructure, private cloud, enterprise platforms or hybrid models?
- What new responsibilities come with greater control over AI infrastructure?
- What testing and review are needed before AI-assisted work is relied upon?
- How should firms separate infrastructure assurance from assurance over the quality of the work produced?
04 / 06
Agent Authority & Technology Supply Chains
- What can this system do, under whose authority, and how can we stop it?
- Which actions should AI agents be allowed to take without human approval?
- How should firms govern connectors, lawyer-built applications and systems moving into production?
- What changes by suppliers, models or subprocessors should trigger a fresh risk review?
- How can firms retain the ability to suspend, limit or exit a technology safely?
05 / 06
Client Assurance & Accountable Leadership
- Can we substantiate what we tell the client?
- How should outside counsel guidelines become practical controls inside the firm?
- Who owns approval of exceptions and deviations from client requirements?
- What evidence should firms be able to provide on AI, confidentiality, suppliers and incident response?
- How should assurance differ by client, matter and level of risk?
06 / 06
Bringing AI In-House:
More Control, Different Responsibilities
- Should your firm own more of its AI infrastructure, or demand better controls from the services it buys?
- Which information or workflows genuinely require a more restricted environment?
- What responsibilities for security, staffing, testing, recovery and cost come with bringing AI in-house?
- Where will firms still depend on external providers even with greater infrastructure control?
- How do you determine whether the complete workflow, not just the hosting model, meets firm and client requirements?
