OVERVIEW

Legal technology risk is no longer an IT problem. It is a client trust problem, a professional responsibility problem, and increasingly a commercial one.

  • Ninety percent of Top 100 UK firms now rank cyber risk as the leading threat to their business ambitions, ahead of macroeconomic volatility at 58%.
  • The average law firm breach costs $5.08 million, and 56% of breached firms lose confidential client information.
  • The FBI has issued sector-specific advisories about threat actors targeting law firms through IT-impersonation social engineering.

Meanwhile AI has moved from experiment to infrastructure, and governance has not kept pace.

Generative AI adoption in legal organizations rose from 14% to 26% in a single year, with 78% of firms expecting it to be central to workflow within five years. Yet only 41% have an AI policy, only 40% provide training, only 20% measure return, and 71% of corporate clients do not know whether their outside counsel uses AI at all. Eighty-five percent of clients say firms should disclose AI use on their matters.

Inside Legal Tech Risk is built on one organising thesis: cyber, data, AI, vendor and client-commitment risk are not five problems. They are one governance problem viewed from five angles.

FIVE Core Themes

What We're Examining

From ransomware to agentic oversight, five converging risk domains reshaping how law firms protect clients, evidence trust, and govern technology at scale.

01 / 06

The Client Imperative: Assurance, Not Assertion

The relationship has inverted. Clients no longer assume firms are safe custodians, they audit them. Outside counsel guidelines have become technology contracts, and "we take security seriously" no longer clears the bar.
