OVERVIEW
The Professional Support Lawyer role is changing.
What began in many firms as a role centred on precedents, research, technical updates and training has steadily expanded into something much broader: shaping how legal knowledge is captured and deployed, how lawyers develop, how technology is used in practice, and increasingly how legal work itself gets done.
AI accelerates that change.
As research, summarisation, drafting and knowledge retrieval become increasingly AI-assisted, some of the activities historically associated with PSLs and Knowledge Lawyers can now be performed differently — and sometimes by the lawyers themselves.
But that does not make the role less important. It raises a more interesting question: What should firms use this expertise for now?
The opportunity is for PSLs and Knowledge Lawyers to move further upstream: from maintaining knowledge to designing how expertise flows through a practice; from delivering training to building capability; from supporting individual lawyers to improving entire workflows; and from being custodians of what the firm knows to helping determine how that knowledge is combined with technology, judgement and experience.
That transition is already beginning. But it creates difficult questions about remit, skills, status, investment, career paths and accountability.
- Where should PSLs sit between practice groups, Knowledge, Innovation, Learning & Development and Technology?
- Who should determine where AI can genuinely improve legal work?
- How should firms preserve the judgement and institutional knowledge that AI cannot simply generate?
- What happens to lawyer development when technology removes some of the work through which expertise has traditionally been acquired?
- And how should firms measure the value created by roles whose greatest contribution may be making everyone else better?

The PSL Forum is built around a simple idea: The next generation of Professional Support and Knowledge Lawyers will not simply manage what the firm knows. They will help determine how the firm practises.
Join us to examine what that means for the role, for practice groups and for law firm leadership, and what firms should be doing now to build the knowledge function they will need next.
Is your firm making full use of the expertise sitting inside its PSL and Knowledge Lawyer community?
SIX Core Themes
What We’re Examining
Six connected themes exploring how the PSL and Knowledge Lawyer role is changing — and the decisions firms need to make about expertise, technology, people and practice.
01 / 06
The Evolving PSL: What Is the Role Becoming?
- If technology can retrieve knowledge, where does the PSL create distinctive value?
- Which traditional responsibilities remain important — and which should disappear?
- Are PSLs becoming practice strategists, workflow designers, educators, technologists or something else entirely?
- How different should the role look across transactional, advisory and contentious practices?
- What should a high-performing PSL or Knowledge Lawyer actually be accountable for in 2030?
02 / 06
AI, Knowledge & the New Expertise Infrastructure
- What happens to Knowledge when lawyers increasingly access expertise through AI rather than searching for it themselves?
- How should precedents, playbooks, matter knowledge and know-how evolve for an AI-enabled firm?
- What role should PSLs play in testing, training and improving AI-enabled legal workflows?
- How do firms distinguish authoritative firm knowledge from plausible AI-generated answers?
- Does AI make curated knowledge more important rather than less?
03 / 06
From Knowledge Support to Practice Transformation
- Where can PSLs influence how legal work is actually performed?
- Which workflows should be redesigned rather than simply accelerated with AI?
- How can PSLs translate legal expertise into repeatable processes, playbooks and technology-enabled workflows?
- Where should responsibility sit between Knowledge, Innovation, Legal Technology and the practice?
- How do firms turn isolated experimentation into better ways of working across an entire team?
04 / 06
Developing Lawyers When the Work Is Changing
- What happens when AI performs some of the work through which junior lawyers traditionally learned?
- Which skills must lawyers develop themselves before they can safely supervise technology?
- How should training change when knowledge can be accessed instantly but judgement still has to be developed?
- Can PSLs become architects of continuous learning inside practice groups?
- How do firms build legal judgement, commercial awareness and critical thinking in an AI-assisted environment?
05 / 06
Influence, Status & the PSL Career
- Does the organisational status of PSLs reflect the strategic importance firms now place on knowledge?
- What does progression look like when partnership is neither the only nor necessarily the right destination?
- Which new skills will distinguish the next generation of Knowledge Lawyers?
- How should firms recruit, reward and retain lawyers whose impact extends beyond personal billings?
- Should PSLs have a stronger voice in practice strategy, technology investment and client delivery?
06 / 06
Proving Value:
What Should Firms Invest In Now?
- How do you demonstrate the commercial value of better knowledge, training and practice infrastructure?
- Which measures matter beyond utilisation and hours saved?
- Where should firms invest: people, content, AI, data, workflow design or capability building?
- What should practice leaders expect from their PSL and Knowledge teams — and what should those teams expect from leadership?
- If the role is becoming more strategic, what needs to change in mandate, budget and decision-making authority?
