A lawyer by training, a human rights and sustainability adviser by day, academic by night and an innovator at heart. Phil Chan is deeply committed to driving impact through responsible business with passion and purpose. For over a decade, he has been a trusted adviser to companies and government organisations on issues ranging from modern slavery, discrimination and responsible AI to net zero, sustainable supply chains, children's rights and social impact innovation. His expertise spans both legal knowledge and practical implementation of ESG standards such as the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, OECD Guidelines, modern slavery acts, corporate sustainability due diligence and reporting. In his current role as the inaugural Senior Legal Counsel - Human Rights at Booking.com, Phil designs and implements responsible business initiatives for the world's largest travel and technology company. This includes legal advice, regulatory compliance, strategy and policy development, risk and impact assessments, due diligence, stakeholder engagement, trainings, partnerships and regulatory reporting. Previously, he led ethical, sustainable and social procurement at the University of Sydney, designed corporate responsibility programs at Australia's oldest bank Westpac, and advised multinational companies at KPMG's Human Rights and Social Impact consultancy. These experiences have deepened his ability to navigate complex legal and risk landscapes, and deliver practical solutions for meaningful impact. A passionate educator and keynote speaker, Phil has served as the Academic Dean at Wesley College within Sydney University and as a lecturer in human rights law at Western Sydney University. He is a World Economic Forum Global Shaper, one of Australia's top 25 influential changemakers in the pro bono sector, and awarded for leadership and innovation in responsible sourcing by the Banksia Sustainability Foundation. Phil is an Australian qualified lawyer since 2016. He holds a Master of Laws as a Westpac Future Leaders Scholar from the University of Melbourne, and a Bachelor of Arts (Media and Communications)/Bachelor of Laws, with a major in Government and International Relations, from the University of Sydney.
